Also supporting your conclusions. At night and immediately pre-dawn it was not at all uncommon for the biggest trout to be in 12 inches or less of water. Sometimes mere steps off the beach. I don’t know if they do this more to avoid dolphins or to aid feeding but that’s where they are. Snook too, snook being the most ”ballsy” if you will as far as going shallow. Snook will go anywhere its wet.

Never before or since have I seen such numbers of monster trout off the beach. They are always present but never in that quantity. Worth noting that the 9.5 pounder ate a 14 inch skipjack and all of my 30 inch trout were caught on live baits exceeding 8 inches in length. Spot croaker, needle gar, mullet, and skipjack.

I fish and gig the surf around corpus christi 5-6 days a week. The summer following the bad freeze of 2021(I believe) I caught 5 trout over 30 inches including my PB 9.5 pounder. On nights with clear water and good visibility it was not uncommon for me to see as many as 10 trout pushing the 30 inch mark and there were sometimes schools of trout all over 25 inches lurking in the first and second guts during the day often with bathers in and around them. Seems to support your theory.
